Low start-up costs and unlimited potential made this online retail business a ‘no-brainer’

Brothers, Nigel and Glenn Chilcott, are no strangers to working together. For the past two years, they’ve been building a property business together after leaving their corporate IT careers in London. But they needed another income stream, and joining an online retail franchise seemed the perfect way to do it and keep them away from the typical nine-to-five existence.

Despite not having any experience of the ecommerce world, other than from a consumer perspective, Nigel and Glenn believed they had some valuable transferable skills that would beneft their business. Glenn has an MBA, so was comfortable with business strategy and branding, and Nigel is technically-minded and confident using online systems. In addition, they both had the enthusiasm and determination to make it work.

Still, even with their vast combined experience in business, they decided to join Platinum Business Partners in April 2016.

“We could see that the online retail sector is only set to grow and grow and that markets will open up in other territories. The start-up costs were fairly low in comparison to other businesses, but there is unlimited potential for us to grow our business to a size that suits us.”

Nigel added: “We realised that you could probably do this on your own, but that it would take a lot longer, not only to get started but to become profitable too. Being taught by mentors who have been there, done it and made the mistakes, as well as being part of a support network, is hugely beneficial. We like the way that Platinum operates with integrity and in the medium to long-term, the franchise fee will become a very cost-effective investment.

Following the initial two-day training in April and subsequent one-to-one mentoring sessions, Nigel and Glenn started following the process and researching potential products to sell via their ecommerce business.

As it happens, the branding was the most enjoyable part. “We knew that our target customers spent a lot of money on their pets but a lot of our potential competitors were using pet puns and jokes in their branding,” said Glenn. “We wanted to position ourselves as a reputable, serious and caring brand and we’re really proud of what we’ve created.”


Glenn and Nigel sold their first product on Amazon on 18th September 2016 and are just about to launch their sixth product line. Within nine months of trading, they’ve achieved a six-figure sales revenue and last month’s net proft was more than £3,500.

Having such a diverse portfolio has enabled the brothers to achieve more than 30 sales per day on average. This approach forms a key part of the Platinum Business Partners system and allows for underperforming products.

Glenn added: “The network is full of like-minded individuals that are willing to share advice, challenges and successes. There’s no way building this business would have been so enjoyable if we’d have done it on our own, nor would we have moved so quickly. The training and mentoring has been excellent and the quarterly momentum days are extremely valuable. More importantly, you retain a level of autonomy and can adapt the system to work for you.”
